Considered Questions
The questions people actually ask.
My bariatric surgery was years ago — is it too late to do this?
Not at all — if anything, being years out and at a settled weight is often the ideal time. Excess skin doesn’t “expire,” and many of the post-bariatric patients Dr. Marchand finishes had their gastric bypass or sleeve five, ten or more years ago and simply never took the last step. What matters is a stable weight and being medically well, not how long ago your surgery was.
Can diet or exercise fix loose skin?
Once skin has been stretched past its elastic limit by a major bariatric weight loss, no amount of diet, exercise, protein, water or time will retract it. Muscle tone and posture improve with training; loose, non-retracting skin does not. Excisional surgery is the only mechanism that removes it. This is a general biological reality, not a reflection of your effort — and after a bariatric transformation, effort is the last thing you’re short on.
How bad are the scars, honestly?
Real and permanent. A lower or circumferential body lift leaves a scar around the waistline; an arm lift runs along the inner arm; a thigh lift along the inner thigh. They are placed to sit beneath clothing and they fade and flatten over many months, but they do not disappear. The scar is the honest trade for the skin coming off — and for the right candidate, worth it.
How much recovery are we really talking about?
It depends on the zone and scope. A single-area arm or thigh lift is a moderate recovery; a lower or full body lift is significant, with the first week or two the most restricted and gradual return over several weeks. This is real surgery under anaesthesia — not a single visit and never a “lunchtime” fix. Timelines are typical ranges, individual to you, never guaranteed.
Can I have it all done at once, or is it staged?
For most people with excess skin across several zones, a staged roadmap over 6–12 months is safer and heals better than one enormous operation. Some smaller combinations can be done together where it’s safe. Dr. Marchand plans the honest scope for your body — never more surgery in one sitting than is wise.
What order are the zones usually done in?
There’s a sensible sequence — often the abdomen and lower body first, then arms, thighs and chest — but the right order for you is decided together, around your priorities, your recovery and what the result requires. It’s a plan individualized at consultation, not a fixed template.
Does it matter that I lost the weight through bariatric surgery (or a GLP-1)?
Mostly for timing and planning. This page is about the skin your weight loss left behind — not your bariatric surgery or any medication itself. We make no medical claims about bariatric procedures or GLP-1 drugs, and we don’t prescribe or sell weight loss. What matters for skin-removal surgery is that your weight is settled: most post-bariatric patients reach that point and stay there, which makes them excellent candidates — but if you’re still losing, it’s usually best to reach a stable weight for about six months first, so the result holds.
What does the staged roadmap actually cost?
Rather than a single large sticker, the roadmap carries one monthly line for the whole journey — from about $299/month, depending on the zones in your plan — with a soft-check financing option that doesn’t touch your credit. Your exact figure is prepared for you privately at consultation, once your plan exists. It’s cosmetic surgery, so it isn’t insurance-covered.
My apron causes rashes or infections — could any of it be covered?
Possibly — and post-bariatric patients qualify for this more often than most, because a large hanging apron is more likely to cause documented medical symptoms. When it causes documented rashes, infections, hygiene difficulty or mobility limits, removing it (a panniculectomy) can be medically necessary and may be covered by insurance — that depends entirely on your plan and its criteria and is never approved or guaranteed here. Tell us at your consultation; we verify your benefits, build the medical-necessity case and handle the paperwork, and the aesthetic contour can often be added as a cash step in the same operation.
Will the results last?
Skin removal is long-lasting — the excess skin is gone for good. That said, significant future weight change or natural ageing can still affect your body over time, so a stable weight helps the result hold. Dr. Marchand will be honest about what to expect for your case.
How do I know if I’m even a candidate?
The short 60-second check gives a considered first read on your zones, your timing and your path. It isn’t a diagnosis — a board-certified surgeon confirms candidacy at your complimentary consultation, for patients 18 and over.
